"Eat Smarties and stay warm!"
On 21st November 2010, Wilf Doyle initiated his “Smarties” campaign. This involved the distribution of tubes of Smarties, generously provided by Wilf, which parishioners then filled with conveniently shaped 20p pieces (after consuming the chocolates, of course!). Thanks to Wilf’s generosity in providing the Smarties in the first place, there are no deductions made from the amount raised.
The target was to generate £500 per year and this has almost been achieved as in the intervening period (up to the end of November 2019), 312 tubes have been returned and the amazing sum of £4,090 raised, £420 in the last year.
Some parishioners have taken two or three tubes in a year (obviously they are chocoholics), but everyone is free to decide how long they want to spend filling a tube; it doesn’t matter if it takes three, six or twelve months to do so. Wilf does not keep records of who takes a tube.
These funds go towards extra heating of the church during the cold weather, much appreciated by the congregation.
Anyone wishing to participate should ask Wilf who will be only too happy to oblige.
