Theme of today’s Mass: “Christ who is everything and in everything”: Today our thoughts are on heavenly things, not on the things of earth where, without Christ, all is vanity and great injustice.
Thank you: Thank you to Monsignor Philip Carroll for celebrating Mass for us last Sunday and for his thoughts on the subject of prayer and distractions.
Sick list: Please pray for the following members of our parish: Beryl Ford, Bernard Moyers, Ida De Melo, Maurice Nixon, Irene Pallot, Eva Shirreffs, Stefania Stasior, Angela Doyle.
Recently dead: We pray for the repose of the soul of Joseph Gabriel Wilkie, Cath Jackson’s father, who died recently. Our thoughts and prayers are with Cath and her family.
Finances: Collection 28th July: £105.00. Mass Offerings: £10.00. Candles: £4.40. Many thanks. (Cheques payable to St Gregory’s RC Parish).
Parish Garden Party: This will take place on Sunday 18th August at the home of Stephen and Roberta in Burton on the Wolds (and not Burton upon Trent!) from 1.00pm. All parishioners are warmly invited. It would be useful if you could bring a folding chair. You are asked to bring a drink and something sweet or savoury. A list will be published for people to detail what they can bring so that we do not have too much of one thing and too little of another. There will be a raffle to raise funds for a very worthwhile charity, the oncology unit (run by Professor Stephen Chan) at the QMC. At Fr John’s mother’s recent funeral, this was the charity that the St. John family wished to support, in gratitude for the treatment that Fr John’s sister has received there. It seems like a very appropriate charity for us as a parish to support on this occasion. If you would like to attend (and we hope that you will) you can get the venue address from Stephen or Roberta next Sunday after Mass. At the same time, lifts can be organised for those who need one.
Annual Queen of Peace Pilgrimage: The annual Queen of Peace Pilgrimage to Walsingham, the Catholic National Shrine of Our Lady, will take place on 26th August (Bank Holiday Monday). Please see the poster at the back of church which gives details of cost, timings and a contact number.
Catholic News: There is an article in the July edition of Catholic News on the subject of “Ecumenical activity in Barrow upon Soar”. The article is primarily the work of Kathryn Timmons who is tireless in her support of the “Churches Together in Barrow” group. There is a copy of the article on the parish website (link on the Home Page) and on the notice board at the back of church.
Children’s Liturgy: Please note that, in view of various holiday commitments, there will be no children’s liturgy until Sunday 25th August.
Confirmation preparation: The next meeting of the confirmation group will be after Mass on 1stSeptember. Please remember that the Bishop will be coming on Friday 20th September for the confirmation Mass. There will be a shared table in the hall afterwards. This promises to be a real celebration of fellowship in the Parish, and of hope for the future.
Rosary Rally: The 33rdAnnual Rosary Rally will be held again this year at Mount St Bernard Abbey on Sunday 1stSeptember to pray for World Peace and Young People. It will start at 2.00pm with a concelebrated Mass. Please see the poster at the back of church for full details.
Pilgrimage to Knock Shrine, Ireland: 30th September 2019. Contact Patricia on 01268 762 278 or 07740 175557 or email knockpilgrimages@gmail.comfor details. There is also a poster at the back of church.
Holiday Worship: If you are going away over the summer, don’t forget to let Peter Fryer have photographs of any churches where you’ve remembered our little parish on your travels. And don’t forget to take a parish prayer card from the back of the church before you go! Recent pictures include that of a chapel in a former salt mine near Kracow in Poland.
After Mass: Please come and join us in the Social Centre for a cup of tea/coffee/soft drink and a chat. If you are a newcomer or a visitor you are particularly welcome.
