Theme of today’s Mass: Today is the feast day of the Holy Family, but also every family's feast day, since the Holy Family is the patron and model of all Christian families. Today should be a huge family feast, since it is devoted entirely to the Holy Family as a model for Christian family life. Children must learn to see in their father the foster-father St. Joseph, and the Blessed Mother as the perfect model for their own mother. The lesson to be learned is both practical and theoretical, in that the children must learn how to obey and to love their parents in thought, word and action, just as Christ was obedient to Mary and Joseph.
Sick List: Please pray for the following members of our parish: Bernard Moyers, Patrick Hodgson, Tod Smith, Angela Doyle, Ida De Melo, Maurice Nixon, Eva Shirreffs, Stefania Stasior, Irene Pallot.
Christmas Eve Mass: Everyone agreed that this year’s was a greatly improved version. Thanks to the children for their key role in the service: reading, acting, serving, collecting; to the adults behind the scenes who prepared them so well; to Bernadeta and her mother for providing the music; to Zachary for being such a wonderful Baby Jesus!
Advent Reflections: Thank you to the Justice and Peace group for providing us with thought-provoking reflections and practical suggestions over the Advent period. These reflections will remain on the website if you should wish to re-read them.
Advent Appeal: The young people have chosen to support “Loughborough Town of Sanctuary” as our parish charity by collecting donations of money (basket next to Our Lady’s statue) for food vouchers; hats, scarves and gloves; toiletries, including toothbrushes and toothpaste, soap and shower gels, shampoo, deodorant; games, colouring books and activity packs for children. Loughborough Town of Sanctuary welcomes the up to 200 people who are required to report at the Home Office Immigration Reporting Centre in Loughborough each day.  A few thousand people travel from across the East Midlands to Loughborough to report, perhaps weekly, fortnightly or less frequently. In order to make them feel welcome when they visit Loughborough, volunteers meet and greet people outside the Reporting Centre, offer information about sources of help in Leicester, Derby and Nottingham and offer vouchers for food and drink.
Can you help?: We are indeed fortunate that so many people do so much for our little parish, but there is always room for more volunteers. Could you join any of the following groups: Church cleaning; children’s liturgy; offertory rota; reading at Mass. New lists will be prepared shortly, so if you think that you might be able to help, please have a word with Fr John after Mass and he will point you in the direction of the person who looks after the different lists. No previous experience needed! Full training given! Job satisfaction guaranteed!
Postage stamps: Please remember to bring your used postage stamps to church and place them in the box at the back of church. These go to support a charity which trains dogs to warn their owners of life-threatening conditions.
Catholic Diaries 2020: These are available at the back of church at a very reasonable £2.50. Please take one and leave the money in the box.
SPUC 2020 Youth Conference: This will take place from Friday 28th February – Sunday 1st March in Bedfordshire. Details of the programme can be found at the back of church and on the parish website. The Melton branch of SPUC has kindly offered to pay the full cost of the conference (and arrange transport) for two young people to attend. If you are interested, please see Wilf as soon as possible.
Finances: Collection: 22nd December: £98.80. Candles: £6.30. Diaries: £8.00. Smarties: £12.00 (15/12/19). Christmas Eve and Christmas Day collections: £263.80. Many thanks. (Cheques to be made payable to: St Gregory’s RC Church)
