Theme of today’s Mass: “Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant”: God made the new covenant of his love with the poor, the lowly, the downtrodden and the oppressed. It is therefore in a spirit of humility, the spirit of Jesus, that we make our celebration today, asking him to accept the homage of the humble.
Sick list: Please pray for the following members of our parish: Beryl Ford, Bernard Moyers, Patrick Hodgson, Ida De Melo, Maurice Nixon, Irene Pallot, Eva Shirreffs, Stefania Stasior, Angela Doyle.
Two of our WWII evacuees: Exactly eighty years ago today, Sheila Breed and Wilf Doyle arrived in Sileby as WWII evacuees from Sheffield. Their memories are recorded on the separate sheets attached to this newsletter. Without doubt, they are two of Yorkshire’s finest exports.
Return to School: At the beginning of the new academic year, we remember in our prayers all pupils, their parents and their teachers. This can sometimes be a testing time for all three groups; we pray that the year ahead will be rewarding, enriching and stress-free.
Finances: Collection 25th August: £106.10. Mass Offerings: £30.00. Candles: £4.60. Many thanks. (Cheques payable to St Gregory’s RC Parish).
Financial Report to Parish 2018-19: This report will be presented at Mass this morning. In summary: Income £35,700 (last year £37,700); Expenditure £31,700 (£35,300); Surplus £4,000 (£2,400). This surplus will be added to our reserves as we continue to build these up to fund the maintenance and upgrade of our three properties.
Volunteers needed: Before the Bishop’s visit there will be a “clean-up” on Saturday 14th September between 2.00-4.00pm. Please come if you are able to help in any way.
Confirmation preparation: The next meeting of the confirmation group will be after Mass today. Please remember that the Bishop will be coming on Friday 20th September for the Confirmation Mass. There will be a shared table in the hall afterwards. This promises to be a real celebration of fellowship in the Parish, and of hope for the future. It would be wonderful display of parish solidarity, not to mention a strong message to the Bishop, if we were able to have a “full house” at Mass on 20th, whether or not you are related to one of the candidates.
Macmillan Coffee Morning: This will take place on Saturday 28th September in the hall from 10.00am to noon. Donations of cakes or a prize for the raffle would be most welcome. This year the Confirmation group will be helping the Friends which is wonderful. Donations can be given to Bron Coleman, Veronica Powell or Roberta Giacchino.
Divine Infant of Prague BBQ: This will take place on September 29th to which parishioners from St. Gregory's are most welcome. It will take place after 11 am Mass.
St Gregory – our parish patron saint: St. Gregory, was born in Rome around 540, the son of a wealthy senator. He later renounced the world and became one of the seven deacons of Rome. Emperor Justin the Younger appointed him, in 574, Chief Magistrate of Rome, though he was only thirty-four years of age. After the death of his father, he built six monasteries in Sicily and founded a seventh in his own house in Rome, which became the Benedictine Monastery of St. Andrew. Here, he took the monastic habit in 575. He was chosen Pope and then his work began which earned him the title of Great. He is known above all for his magnificent contributions to the Liturgy of the Mass and Office. He is one of the four great Doctors of the Latin Church. He died March 12th, 604. He is the patron of teachers.
PPC Meeting: The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday 25thSeptember. Please give some thought to any item that you would like to be raised.
After Mass: Please come and join us in the Social Centre for a cup of tea/coffee/soft drink and a chat. If you are a newcomer or a visitor you are particularly welcome.
