Syston 11.00am Mass (Adrian Kelly RIP)
Theme of today’s Mass: “Victory with Christ”: Today’s celebration should raise our morale in the fight against evil. Christ our Leader, who came to bring fire on the earth, communicates to us something of his tremendous zeal.
Sick list: Please pray for the following members of our parish: Beryl Ford, Bernard Moyers, Ida De Melo, Patrick Hodgson, Maurice Nixon, Irene Pallot, Eva Shirreffs, Stefania Stasior, Angela Doyle.
Parish Garden Party: This will take place TODAY 18th August at the home of Stephen and Roberta in Burton on the Wolds from 1.00pm. All parishioners are warmly invited. It would be useful if you could bring a folding chair. You are asked to bring a drink and something sweet or savoury. There is a list in the Social Centre for people to indicate what they can bring so that we do not have too much of one thing and too little of another. Roberta has suggested that you bring a bag or a bowl if you would like to help yourself to some apples which are starting to ripen. There will be a raffle to raise funds for a very worthwhile charity, the oncology unit (run by Professor Stephen Chan) at the QMC. At Fr John’s mother’s recent funeral, this was the charity that the St. John family wished to support, in gratitude for the treatment that Fr John’s sister has received there. It seems like a very appropriate charity for us as a parish to support on this occasion. If you would like to attend (and we hope that you will) you can get the venue address from Stephen or Roberta after Mass today. At the same time, lifts can be organised for those who need one.
End of Summer Pizza Party: On Friday 30th August at 6pm in the church hall. An evening of fun and games for all the young people in our parish
New Altar Server: We are delighted to welcome Mark Boland to the ranks of our excellent altar servers. Mark has many years’ experience serving at St. Patrick’s Church in Leicester and two of his grandchildren are current servers here at St. Gregory’s. Mark will serve when there is room on the altar.
Old Altar Server: Wilf is not here today and, to spare his blushes it is worth reminding ourselves of his contribution: every Sunday he opens the church and oversees the preparations for Mass while many of us are still having our breakfast. After Mass when we have all left, he clears everything away and locks up. This Christmas he will celebrate seventy-nineyears as an altar server.
Mass Intentions: If you wish to have a Mass said for a special occasion or an anniversary, it would be helpful if you could make the request a couple of months in advance. For example, the next available Sunday is September 22nd. Masses on Wednesdays and Fridays are less “in demand” and it is usually easier to make a request for one of these days at shorter notice.
Finances: Collection 11th August: £110.90. Mass Offerings: £10.00. Candles: £7.30. Smarties: £12.40 & £12.80 (4.8.19). Many thanks. (Cheques payable to St Gregory’s RC Parish).
Children’s Liturgy: Please note that Children’s Liturgy will resume next Sunday 25th August.
Confirmation preparation: The next meeting of the confirmation group will be after Mass on 1stSeptember. Please remember that the Bishop will be coming on Friday 20th September for the confirmation Mass. There will be a shared table in the hall afterwards. This promises to be a real celebration of fellowship in the Parish, and of hope for the future. It would be wonderful display of parish solidarity, not to mention a strong message to the Bishop, if we were able to have a “full house” at Mass on 20th, whether or not you are related to one of the candidates.
Rosary Rally: The 33rd Annual Rosary Rally will be held again this year at Mount St Bernard Abbey on Sunday 1st September. Please see the poster at the back of church for full details.
After Mass: Please come and join us in the Social Centre for a cup of tea/coffee/soft drink and a chat. If you are a newcomer or a visitor you are particularly welcome.
