Syston 11.00am Mass (Intentions of Quinn family)
Theme of today’s Mass: "Rejoice: the Lord is nigh." As Christmas draws near, the Church emphasizes the joy which should be in our hearts over all that the birth of our Saviour means for us. The great joy of Christians is to see the day drawing nigh when the Lord will come again in his glory to lead them into his kingdom. Today is known as “Gaudete Sunday”. The term “Gaudete” refers to the first word of the Entrance Antiphon, "Rejoice". Rose vestments are worn to emphasize our joy that Christmas is near, and we also light the rose candle on our Advent wreath.
Sick List: Please pray for the following members of our parish: Bernard Moyers, Patrick Hodgson, Tod Smith, Angela Doyle, Ida De Melo, Maurice Nixon, Eva Shirreffs, Stefania Stasior, Irene Pallot.
Christmas Mass times: Joint Parish Christmas Carol Service is being held this year in Systonon Sunday 22nd at 3.00pm; Christmas Eve Children’s Nativity Mass at 6.00pm in Sileby: Christmas Day Mass at 9.00am in Sileby and 11.00am in Syston.
Prayer and Devotion Together:
“For where there are two or three gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”(Matthew 18:20)
This week in church: Sunday 15th at 3.00pm “Holy Rosary”; Tuesday 17th at 10.30am “Divine Mercy”: Friday 20th at 10.30am “Sacred Heart”.
Advent Reflections: The Justice and Peace Group has produced another thought-provoking reflection for the Advent period. You will find the third reflection attached to this newsletter.
Advent Appeal: The young people have chosen to support “Loughborough Town of Sanctuary” as our parish Advent Charity. We want to support the work of this charity during Advent by collecting donations of money for food vouchers; hats, scarves and gloves; toiletries, including toothbrushes and toothpaste, soap and shower gels, shampoo, deodorant; games, colouring books and activity packs for children. You can find out more about the charity by clicking on the link on the Home Page of the parish website.
Postage stamps: please remember to bring your used postage stamps to church and place them in the box at the back of church. These go to support a charity which trains dogs to warn their owners of life-threatening conditions. For example: Gemma has “Brittle” Type 1 diabetes where sugar levels fall or spike with alarming speed. Her trained dog sleeps by her bed and is aware if Gemma’s sugar levels change dramatically while she is sleeping. In the event he alerts her parents who then take action.
Catholic Diaries 2020: These are available at the back of church at a very reasonable £2.50. Please take one and leave the money in the box.
Finances: Collection: 8th December: £138.30. Candles: £4.70. Christmas Flowers: £10.00. Smarties: £38.60 (1/12/19) - (£12.60; £13.20; £12.80) Many thanks. (Cheques to be made payable to: St Gregory’s RC Church)
Second Collection: There will be a second collection today for Poor and Needy Parishes.
CAFOD: We received a letter from CAFOD thanking us for the recent collection that amounted to £190.56.
Smarties Scheme: Last Sunday Wilf gave an update on the Smarties scheme which he launched nine years ago. The monies collected help to pay for the heating of the church to the benefit of all parishioners. The scheme is very simple: Wilf provides tubes of Smarties free of charge; parishioners take a tube (no need to notify Wilf or anyone else), eat the Smarties, fill the empty tube with 20p coins and return to tube to Wilf when ready to do so. There is no time limit. Over the last year the scheme has raised £420. Many thanks to all who support this venture. “Eat Smarties and stay warm.”
After Mass: Please come and join us in the Social Centre for a cup of tea/coffee/soft drink and a chat. If you are a newcomer or a visitor you are particularly welcome.
