Theme of today’s Mass: “His Word Is Near”: Let His Holy Word be in our mouths and in our hearts; let us witness His proximity to all, even to those who do not yet discern the nearness of His living Word.
“The God Who Speaks”: The theme of today’s Mass invites reflection on the mystery of our God who speaks. The Catholic Bishops of England and Wales have dedicated 2020 to encountering afresh the living presence of Christ in the Holy Scriptures under the theme of “The God Who Speaks”. The initiative is timed to mark the 10thAnniversary of Verbum Domini, Pope Benedict XIV’s apostolic exhortation on ‘the Word of the Lord’, as well as the 1,600thAnniversary of the death of St Jerome, the translator and Church Father who gave the Church the Latin Vulgate Bible. Commencing on 30thSeptember 2019 – the feast day of St Jerome – this initiative will be a year-long challenge to enrich current practice and explore new ways of celebrating, living and sharing the Word. Perhaps the summer break offers a perfect opportunity to reflect on the place of Scripture in our lives, and think about how we, as a parish, can answer the call to meet the risen Lord anew in the living Word of God.
Sick list: Please pray for the following members of our parish: Beryl Ford, Bernard Moyers, Ida De Melo, Maurice Nixon, Irene Pallot, Eva Shirreffs, Stefania Stasior, Angela Doyle.
Finances: Collection 7th July: £136.30. Many thanks for your support. (Cheques payable to St Gregory’s RC Parish).
Second Collection: There will be a second collection todayin support of “The Apostleship of the Sea”. The Apostleship of the Sea serves seafarers from across the world, regardless of belief, nationality or race. In all the main ports in Great Britain a team of chaplains and volunteers visit thousands of seafarers each year, meeting their needs through the provision of help, support and advice. There are ten mandatory second collections each year and this is the seventh. Thank you in advance for your unfailing generosity.
School’s Out: With most schools having broken up for the summer this week, we could perhaps take time to remember our young people in our prayers. Whether they be moving class or moving school, about to embark on their school career, or just finishing it, it is an important time of change for all of them.
Children’s Liturgy: Please note that there will be no Children’s Liturgy programme running over the summer to allow for various holiday commitments. However, the leaders look forward to recommencing the programme, suitably refreshed, on Sunday 25th August.
Confirmation preparation: The confirmation programme has also now broken up for the summer, and will recommence after August with meetings on 1st September and 8th September. All parishioners are reminded to keep Friday 20thSeptember in their diaries, as this will be when the Bishop will be visiting the parish to confirm our candidates. This will be followed by a shared table, and promises to be something of a highlight in what has been an exciting year for the parish.
Friends of St Gregory’s: The next meeting of the Friends of St Gregory’s will take place on Wednesday 17th July at 2pm. All are welcome. Please ask Sheila Breed for details.
Holiday Worship: If you are going away over the summer, don’t forget to let Peter Fryer have photographs of any churches where you’ve remembered our little parish on your travels. And don’t forget to take a parish prayer card from the back of the church before you go!
