Syston 11.00am Mass (Peter Bock RIP)
Theme of today’s Mass: “The Lord Our God”: The Lord has chosen us to be his people. Though we are a little flock, our history goes back into the dim and distant past. The God we worship is the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. We also look forward in hope to a glorious future in the kingdom of our Father.
Holyday of Obligation: Thursday 15th August is the solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and is one of the few holydays of obligation celebrated during the week. The vigil Mass will be celebrated here in Sileby on Wednesday at 7.00pm and the Mass of the day will be celebrated in Syston on Thursday at 7.00pm.
Sick list: Please pray for the following members of our parish: Beryl Ford, Bernard Moyers, Ida De Melo, Maurice Nixon, Irene Pallot, Eva Shirreffs, Stefania Stasior, Angela Doyle.
Recently dead: We pray for the repose of the soul of Joseph Gabriel Wilkie, Cath Jackson’s father, who died recently. Our thoughts and prayers are with Cath and her family.
New Altar Server: We are delighted to welcome Mark Boland to the ranks of our excellent altar servers. Mark has many years’ experience serving at St. Patrick’s Church in Leicester and indeed was an invaluable source of help to Wilf at the time that he was organising the annual football tournament for the altar servers of the diocese, so he has already passed his probationary period! Two of his grandchildren are current servers here at St. Gregory’s. Mark will serve when there is room on the altar.
Mass Intentions: If you wish to have a Mass said for a special occasion or an anniversary, it would be helpful if you could make the request a couple of months in advance. For example, the next available Sunday is September 22nd. Masses on Wednesdays and Fridays are less “in demand” and it is usually easier to make a request for one of these days at shorter notice.
Finances: Collection 4th August: £126.70. Mass Offerings: £30.00. Candles: £4.40. Many thanks. (Cheques payable to St Gregory’s RC Parish).
Parish Garden Party: This will take place next Sunday 18th August at the home of Stephen and Roberta in Burton on the Wolds from 1.00pm. All parishioners are warmly invited. It would be useful if you could bring a folding chair. You are asked to bring a drink and something sweet or savoury. A list is posted at the back of church for people to indicate what they can bring so that we do not have too much of one thing and too little of another. Thank you to those who have contributed prizes for the raffle to raise funds for a very worthwhile charity, the oncology unit (run by Professor Stephen Chan) at the QMC. At Fr John’s mother’s recent funeral, this was the charity that the St. John family wished to support, in gratitude for the treatment that Fr John’s sister has received there. It seems like a very appropriate charity for us as a parish to support on this occasion. If you would like to attend (and we hope that you will) you can get the venue address from Stephen or Roberta after Mass today. At the same time, lifts can be organised for those who need one.
Children’s Liturgy: Please note that, in view of various holiday commitments, there will be no children’s liturgy until Sunday 25th August.
Confirmation preparation: The next meeting of the confirmation group will be after Mass on 1stSeptember. Please remember that the Bishop will be coming on Friday 20th September for the confirmation Mass. There will be a shared table in the hall afterwards. This promises to be a real celebration of fellowship in the Parish, and of hope for the future. It would be wonderful display of parish solidarity if we were able to have a “full house” at Mass on 20th, whether or not you are related to one of the candidates.
Holiday Worship: If you are going away over the summer, don’t forget to let Peter Fryer have photographs of any churches where you’ve remembered our little parish on your travels. And don’t forget to take a parish prayer card from the back of the church before you go! Recent pictures include that of a chapel in a former salt mine near Kracow in Poland and the Cathédrale de Reims, in eastern France.
After Mass: Please come and join us in the Social Centre for a cup of tea/coffee/soft drink and a chat. If you are a newcomer or a visitor you are particularly welcome.
