Theme of today’s Mass: “Christ’s Church: a light in the darkness”: The Church is a light shining in the darkness of the world. However, today’s celebration is overshadowed by a great “If”. How much more brightly would that light shine if we who are Christians were really like Christ?
Sick List: Please pray for the following members of our parish: Bernard Moyers, Patrick Hodgson, Tod Smith, Angela Doyle, Ida De Melo, Maurice Nixon, Eva Shirreffs, Stefania Stasior, Irene Pallot.
Rosmini Centre:Thursday 13th 7.00 - 8.30pm Fr Antonio Belsito IC: “The week of the Passion and Death of Jesus.”
St Scholastica:Born in Norcia in Umbria, Italy, in the late fifth century, Scholastica was the sister of Saint Benedict. She consecrated herself to God in early childhood, and lived near her brother’s monastery at Montecassino.
Our Lady of Lourdes:The appearance of the Immaculate Virgin Mary to Bernadette Soubirous in 1858 near Lourdes in France was a call to penance and prayer, which has found particular expression in the service of the sick and the disabled.
Sts Cyril and Methodius:Cyril and Methodius were brothers, born in Salonika about 825 and educated in Constantinople. They translated the Bible and liturgical texts into the Slavonic language. Cyril died in Rome on 14thFebruary 869. Methodius was made a bishop and spent many years preaching the gospel in Hungary, despite resistance and hostility. He died in 885. They are both venerated as “equal to the Apostles” in the Orthodox Church. Pope John Paul II named them co-patrons of Europe with St Benedict in 1980.
St Matthew’s Gospel: There are a few free copies of St Matthew’s Gospel at the back of church. Please help yourself if you would like one; first-come, first-served. In his Advent pastoral letter, Bishop Patrick referred to the desire of Pope Francis that we become more familiar with scripture.
Prayer and Devotion Together:
“For where there are two or three gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”(Matthew 18:20)
This week in church:
Monday 10th at 10.00am: “Holy Rosary”
Tuesday 11th at 10.30am: “Holy Rosary”
Friday 14th at 3.00pm: “Divine Mercy”
Parishioners are invited to join any of the “Prayer and devotion together” sessions and, if they are unable to attend, to indicate on the sheet at the back of church the personal intentions for which they would like prayers offered in their absence.
Finances: Collection: 2nd February: £115.10. Candles: £4.10. Many thanks. (Cheques to be made payable to: St Gregory’s RC Church)
Parish Charity: Loughborough Town of Sanctuary (LTOS). On behalf of LTOS, the Youth Group and the Justice & Peace Group would like to thank parishioners for their donations of money, hats, gloves, scarves and toiletries in the Advent appeal. One of the J & P volunteers at the Home Office Reporting Centre recently met a young woman and baby on a freezing cold January morning. The mother only wore a thin top and very thin anorak and was clearly destitute. She was offered hats, scarves and gloves and a bag filled with toiletries but she kept saying she had no money. She was eventually persuaded that no payment was needed as the gifts had been donated by church groups and other non-faith groups. She was very grateful, so hopefully your kind donations will help her get through the winter. Up to the end of January, £140 has been donated in cash as well as numerous items of clothing. Please continue to support the charity by placing goods/contributions in the box/basket by Our Lady’s statue.
“New” Crucifix: Many thanks to Mark Boland for repairing and refurbishing the crucifix above the main entrance to the church.
Namibia trip: Millie and Matthew spoke to us last Sunday about their planned trip to Namibia with their school, De Lisle, and Schools Worldwide to help local schoolchildren. Their first fund-raising venture will be a curry and quiz night on Saturday 28th March at 6.00pm in the Church Hall. Make a note of the date in your Catholic diary …
Catholic Diaries 2020: These are available at the back of church. Please take one and leave an offering in the white box.
After Mass: Please come and join us in the Social Centre for a cup of tea/coffee/soft drink and a chat. If you are a newcomer or a visitor you are particularly welcome.
