Theme of today’s Mass: “The Day of Pentecost”: Today we celebrate the great day of Pentecost when Christ called the church into being by the power of his Spirit and sent it out into the world to bring his peace, joy and forgiveness to all people.
First Holy Communion: This is a very special day for Hugh, Ben, Kellan, Faith and Caitlin as they celebrate their First Holy Communion. We pray for them, their families, their catechists and all who have helped them take this important step on their spiritual journey.
Photographs: If you take any photos of today’s celebration and are willing to share them, please send them to Peter at the email address at the bottom of this newsletter.
Sick list: Please pray for the following members of our parish: Beryl Ford, Bernard Moyers, Ida De Melo, Maurice Nixon, Irene Pallot, Eva Shirreffs, Stefania Stasior, Angela Doyle.
Confirmation preparation: There are eight candidates. The next meeting is on Sunday, 16th June. Further meetings will be on 23rd June, 30th June, 7th July, 1st September and 8th September. The confirmation Mass will be on 20th September.
Parish Pastoral Council: The next meeting of the PPC is scheduled for Wednesday 19th June at 7.30pm in Barrow after Mass. If you have any matters that you would like to be raised at the meeting, please contact one of the council members: Terry Breed, Veronica Brown, Bron Coleman, Marlene Bartlett, Peter Fryer, Stephen Giacchino (jnr), Cath Jackson, Rebecca Jinks, Pam Looi or Kathryn Timmons.
Saint Barnabas: Barnabas was born in Cyprus and was one of the first converts in Jerusalem, soon after Pentecost. He accompanied St Paul on his first missionary journey, and took part in the Council of Jerusalem. Then he returned to Cyprus to preach the Gospel, and later died there. To find out more about the saints whose feasts occur during the week, please use the links on the version of this newsletter which is on the parish website (address at the bottom of this sheet).
Mary, Mother of the Church: The Marian title of “Mother of the Church,” was given to Our Lady by St Pope Paul VI at the Second Vatican Council. On March 3rd 2018 the Vatican announced Pope Francis’ decision that the Church celebrate the Blessed Virgin Mary in her role as “Mother of the Church” every year on the Monday after Pentecost, as a way to foster Marian piety and the maternal sense of the Church.
Parish Prayer Cards: If you did not get one or would like to take one for somebody else, please help yourself from the box at the back of church. If you are a visitor to our church, please take one and remember us in your prayers when you go back home.
Finances: Many thanks for your continuing generosity. (Cheques payable to “St Gregory’s RC Parish”)
Second Collection: There will be a second collection next Sunday in support of “The Day for Life” which is the day in the Church’s year dedicated to raising awareness about the meaning and value of human life at every stage and in every condition. The Church teaches that life is to be nurtured from conception to natural death. There are ten mandatory second collections each year and this will be the fifth. If it seems as if there have been a lot recently, this is because there have been! There are five collections between the middle of May and the middle of July. Thank you in advance for your unfailing generosity.
Mass Climate Lobby: Wednesday 26th June. Join CAFOD at an unforgettable event in London. It’s time to confront this climate and environmental crisis and tell our leaders that Britain should no longer contribute to the destruction of our common home. Departing from Nottingham and Leicester, Catholics will join with thousands of others to meet our MPs in the streets around parliament, all at the same time! Book a free ticket to let us know you are coming. We will make sure that our politicians act now to build a future where Britain no longer contributes to climate change and protects the environment.
