Mass Theme: “The Church as the prophet of God”.We are privileged to be called by God to be his prophets, to take his words on our lips and proclaim them to the world. But the gift of prophecy is of no help to us without the gift of love, a Christ-like love of the world, which is proof even against the world’s rejection of us.
Sick list: Please pray for the following members of our parish: Bernard Moyers, Maurice Nixon, Irene Pallot, Eva Shirreffs, Stefania Stasior, Terry Cantle, Ida De Melo, Angela Doyle, Beryl Ford.
Mary Powell: Mary Powell’s Requiem will take place on Friday 15th February at 10.00am.
Finances:Collection 27thJanuary: £168.40. Mass Offerings: £50.00. Many thanks. (Cheques to “St Gregory’s RC Parish”)
Change of Mass times:please note that in future the Mass celebrated in Barrow each Wednesday will take place at 7.00pm instead of 7.30pm.
Can you help?A new list will soon be published of those volunteers who help on the “Church Cleaning and Flowers rota”. We are always looking for more parishioners to join the group. This involves working with another parishioner for about one hour on a day that is convenient to both, to hoover, dust and arrange the flowers on the altar. Numbers on the current rota mean that each volunteer appears on the list twice a year. Please consider offering your help in this vital task. No previous experience needed! Full training given! If you can push a vacuum cleaner then you are qualified! For further information, please speak to Sheila after Mass.
Friends of St. Gregory’s: the Friends of St. Gregory’s will be holding one of their regular meetings after Mass todayin the Social Centre. This meeting is open to all parishioners. If you are interested in lending your support to this group, please simply stay behind after Mass.
Peace Sunday: many thanks to the Justice and Peace Group for their input at Mass on Peace Sunday, most notably for their thought-provoking Bidding Prayers. Mention was made of the organisation “Pax Christi”, the international Catholic movement for peace. If you would like to learn more about this organisation, please consult their website: www.paxchristi.org.uk. There is a link on the parish website. If you feel moved to support their work, there are some small white envelopes at the back of church into which you can place your donations. These envelopes can then be put in with the offertory collection and will be forwarded to “Pax Christi”.
Week of Prayer for Christian Unity: there was a series of meetings held recently by “Churches Together in Barrow”. On a national scale, if you would like to know more about the work of “Churches Together in Britain and Ireland”, please look at their website: www.ctbi.org.uk. Again, there is a link on the parish website (address below).
Mary’s Meals: In addition to collecting funds for the charity, we are also aiming to assemble backpacks containing essential items for a young child at school. Please see the display in the School Room for details. Our immediate focus is on the provision of backpacks(new or good quality second-hand) and hand towels and face cloths(new). Other items will be targeted in the weeks ahead and details published in the newsletter. You may, of course, continue to make donations; so far £225 has been donated. There is a donation box into which contributions can be placed in front of the statue of Our Lady. “Gift Aid” forms are available from Cath Jackson.
Saints of the week: to find out more about the saints whose feasts occur during the week, please use the links on the version of this newsletter which is on the parish website (address at the bottom of this sheet).
After Mass: please come and join us in the Social Centre for a cup of tea/coffee/soft drink and a chat. If you are a newcomer or a visitor you are particularly welcome.
