Theme of today’s Mass: “The radiant glory of God”: The Holy Spirit is the radiant glory of God that enlightens the Church and guides it on its way through the world in all its decisions.
Sick list: Please pray for the following members of our parish: Beryl Ford, Bernard Moyers, Ida De Melo, Maurice Nixon, Irene Pallot, Eva Shirreffs, Stefania Stasior, Angela Doyle.
Services this week: Please note that Thursday is the feast of the Ascension and is a Holyday of Obligation. There will be a Vigil Mass here in Sileby at 7.00pm on Wednesday (no Mass in Barrow on that evening). On Thursday there will be Mass in Syston at 7.00pm.
Parish Prayer Cards: These were distributed a fortnight ago. If you did not get one or would like to take one for somebody else, please help yourself from the box at the back of church. If you are a visitor to our church, please take one and remember us in your prayers when you go back home. Sincere thanks to the Friends of St Gregory’s who financed the project.
Finances: Collection 19th May: £71.60. Mass Offerings: £40.00. Many thanks. (Cheques to “St Gregory’s RC Parish”)
Second Collection: There will be a second collection next Sunday for World Communications Day. The theme chosen by the Holy Father, Pope Francis for the 53rd World Communications Day is: “We are members one of another”. (Eph 4,25). From network community to human communities. In his first message for World Communications Day in 2014, the Holy Father called for the Internet to be “an environment rich in humanity, a network not of wires but of people”. The choice of the theme for the 2019 Message confirms Pope Francis’ attention to the new communications environment and for social networks, especially, where he is personally present with his @Pontifex account on Twitter and @Franciscus on Instagram.
Spiritual enrichment: We can never know too much about our faith, but what do we do in order to enhance our spiritual development? At the back of church you will find some copies of a small booklet entitled “Christianity; an introduction to the Catholic faith”, which seeks to give the reader a deeper understanding of the faith. Please take a copy if you are interested. In addition, there is book lent by a parishioner, which you are invited to borrow. It is entitled “Divine Inspirations from Jesus and Mary” and it contains passages to read and reflect on.
Confirmation preparation: The next meeting of the Confirmation Group will take place next Sunday 2nd June. Subsequent meetings will be on 16th June, 23rd June, 30th June, 7th July, 1st September and 8th September. Confirmation is on 20th September.
First Holy Communion: Many thanks to the volunteer photographers who, between them, are guaranteed to catch some memorable moments. A reminder that five of our young parishioners will be making their First Holy Communion at the 9.00am Mass on Sunday 9th June.
SPUC: There are copies of the SPUC Pro-Life Today pamphlet at the back of church. Please help yourself. SPUC has joined with the Knights of St Columba and aim to pray the Rosary in front of the Blessed Sacrament once a month for the unborn and their families. Although we do not have a branch of the Knights of St Columba in our parish, is this “Rosary for Life” something that we could organise here at St. Gregory’s? If you are interested, please have a word with Peter Fryer after Mass.
St Augustine of Canterbury: St Augustine is called “Apostle to the English” and was born in Italy in the sixth century. He became a monk and, as prior of a Roman monastery, was sent by Pope Gregory the Great with forty companions to preach the gospel to the English people. Ordained bishop in Gaul, he arrived in Kent in 597. Under the guidance of Pope Gregory’s Pastoral Rule, he adapted rites and practices to local conditions, and successfully evangelised the kingdom of Kent, establishing bishoprics at Canterbury, Rochester and London. He died in Canterbury on 26thMay in around 604/5. Both Catholics and Anglicans alike venerate Augustine as the founder of the metropolitan see of Canterbury and the English Church.
Hearing Loop: For those with hearing aids, please switch your aid to the T setting to hear direct from the microphones.
After Mass: Please come and join us in the Social Centre for a cup of tea/coffee/soft drink and a chat. If you are a newcomer or a visitor you are particularly welcome.
