Peace Sunday: the Bishops of England and Wales invite us to make today a day of prayer for peace and to reflect on the theme Pope Francis has chosen for the annual World Day of Peace with the challenging title: ‘Good politics serves peace’. Today’s Gospel gives us a most wonderful basis for reflection on our calling to work together for peace (and to get involved in the political process, too, in order to seek that goal). We meet Jesus, his mother and his disciples at the Wedding Feast of Cana. He shares in our human joys - the joys of family, the joys of human love and the pledge of fidelity that unites one heart to another. But he also shares in our sorrows - Mary’s cry: ‘They have no wine’; the realisation that our own resources have run dry, our bonds of love prove fragile, our promises are all too easily betrayed.
SPUC appeal: Many thanks to the parish for the sum of £81.44 raised last Sunday in support of the work of SPUC. In addition, the response to the appeal for cards to be filled in for onward transmission to the Prime Minister was very positive: over 90% of the cards were filled in on Sunday, five cards were taken by parishioners for others not at Mass and only one card remained unused. A great effort.
Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 20th - 25thJanuary: Churches Together in Barrow will be holding a series of meetings: Sunday 20thJan at 10.00am - United Service at the Baptist Church; Monday 21stat 9.00am - Holy Trinity; Tuesday 22ndat 11.45am - Baptist Church; Wednesday 23rdat 6.30pm - Bishop Beveridge Club before Mass; Thursday 24that 7.00pm - Methodist Church; Friday 25that 12.00 noon - Holy Trinity Church. All parishioners are welcome to any of these meetings. The meeting at the Bishop Beveridge Club on Wednesday will last about 20 minutes.
Sick and retired priests’ fund: there will be a second collection today for the “Sick and retired priests’ fund”. This is one of the ten second collections which we are obliged by the diocese to take each year. This is a chance for us to say “thank you” and to remember the many critical moments in our lives when a priest has been there to assist us. As part of the family of the church, our priests should be accorded the respect and support they need at the times when they need it. Supporting the priesthood is indeed an obligation, but also a privilege. By November 2018, the Diocese had raised £4,347,873.00 towards its £5 million pound goal. Thank you for your generosity and support.
Mary’s Meals: So far £225 has been donated to our parish Advent Charity. There is a donation box into which contributions can be placed in front of the statue of Our Lady. “Gift Aid” forms are available from Cath Jackson. In addition to collecting funds for the charity, we are also aiming to assemble backpacks containing essential items for a young child at school. Please see the display in the School Room for details. Our immediate focus is on the provision of backpacks (new or good quality second-hand) and hand towels and face cloths (new). Other items will be targeted in the weeks ahead and details published in the newsletter.
Parish website: recent additions to the website include: photos of our South African visitors, Fr John’s birthday and the Children’s Nativity Mass. The website address is at the bottom of this newsletter.
After Mass: please come and join us in the Social Centre for a cup of tea/coffee/soft drink and a chat. If you are a newcomer or a visitor you are particularly welcome.
