Theme of today’s Mass: We celebrate the ancient feast of the martyrdom of Saints Peter and Paul in Rome. They are often referred to as “princes” of the apostles, from whom we derive our Christian faith. The Lord stood by them and gave them power, so that through them the message of the gospel might be proclaimed for all the world to hear. They kept the faith and received the crown of righteousness.

There are ten mandatory second collections each year and this is the sixth. Thank you in advance for your unfailing generosity.

First Holy Communion: The families of the First Holy Communicants would like to thank the parish for the support that they gave their children throughout their period of preparation as well as on “the big day”, including the successful pizza preparation evening in November, the gift of Mass books and their part in the special service a fortnight ago. It is heart-warming to see that three of the youngsters have now become altar servers. We feel sure that they will live up to the high standards set by their more experienced colleagues and, of course, their teacher. The parish is hugely indebted to the catechists who helped to prepare the children for their big day. If you took some photographs of the occasion and have not yet forwarded them to Peter, please do so as soon as possible (email address at the bottom of this newsletter).

There are ten mandatory second collections each year and this is the sixth. Thank you in advance for your unfailing generosity.
Confirmation preparation: There are eight candidates. The next meeting is today after Mass. Thereafter, the group will meet on 30th June, 7th July, 1st September and 8th September. Confirmation is on Friday 20th September.

Mass Climate Lobby: Wednesday 26th June. Join CAFOD at an unforgettable event in London. Book a free ticket to let us know you are coming.  We will make sure that our politicians act now to build a future where Britain no longer contributes to climate change and protects the environment.  Details at https://cafod.org.uk/Campaign/Climate/Climate-lobby

Fr John: It is with the greatest of sadness that we learnt of the passing of Fr John’s mother on Friday morning. May we all pray for the repose of her soul and keep Fr John and his family in our thoughts at this most difficult time. We do not anticipate any weekday Masses this week, but there will be the usual Services of Word and Sacrament in Barrow and Sileby on Wednesday and Thursday respectively. There will also be Mass on Sunday as usual.
Sick list: Please pray for the following members of our parish: Beryl Ford, Bernard Moyers, Ida De Melo, Maurice Nixon, Irene Pallot, Eva Shirreffs, Stefania Stasior, Angela Doyle.
First Holy Communion: Sincere thanks to all those who made last Sunday’s Mass such a memorable occasion. It was a milestone in the faith journey of the five young people involved, but also a moving celebration of the Spirit at work in the heart of our community. We hope to put some photos on the website soon. Please send any that you have to Peter as soon as possible (email address at the bottom of this newsletter).
New altar servers: We are proud to welcome our new altar servers – Hugh, Caitlin and Faith – who are making their début this morning. We’re sure they will honour the high standards set by their more experienced colleagues … and, of course, by their inimitable teacher.
Eucharistic Ministers:Next Sunday is the feast of Corpus Christi, when our Eucharistic Ministers will renew their promises. They are kindly reminded to bring their scapulars with them to Mass next week.
Finances: Collection 2nd June: £101.20 and £65.60 for World Communication Day. Collection 9th June: £222.06 Many thanks. (Cheques to “St Gregory’s RC Parish”).
Second Collection: There will be a second collection todayin support of “The Day for Life”. Thank you, as ever, for your unfailing generosity.
Confirmation preparation: Eight candidates from the Parish have embarked on their journey to confirmation. They will be meeting after Mass today, and on 23rd June, 30th June, 7th July, 1st September and 8th September. They will be confirmed on Friday 20th September.
Parish Pastoral Council: The next meeting of the PPC is on Wednesday 19thJune at 7.30pm in Barrow. If you would like anything discussed at the meeting, please ask one of the council: Terry Breed, Veronica Brown, Bron Coleman, Marlene Bartlett, Peter Fryer, Stephen Giacchino (jnr), Cath Jackson, Rebecca Jinks, Pam Looi or Kathryn Timmons.
Refugee Week: Tomorrow is the start of Refugee Week. This year we are invited to explore the lives of both refugees and those offering refuge, now and in the past. People fleeing war and persecution have found welcome in Britain for centuries: from Huguenots in the 17thCentury, through Belgians, Jewish, Vietnamese and Kosovans in the 20thCentury, and those seeking refuge today, their stories and contributions surround us and form part of who we are. Refugee stories may seem remote, but in fact they are everywhere, inflecting the culture we inhabit, the books we read, the music we listen to and the food we enjoy. They also live in many of the people around us. Let’s challenge ourselves this week to meet at least one person with a story of refuge – recent or historic –, listen to them, glimpse the world through their eyes and feel the connections that bind us all in the land we share.
St Mary’s Grub Club: Our friends at St Mary’s in Loughborough run a club that aims to provide a cooked meal and activities for disadvantaged children during the holidays when the free school meals these children depend on are not available. He accompanied St Paul on his first missionary journey, and took part in the Council of Jerusalem. Then he returned to Cyprus to preach the Gospel, and later died there. To find out more about the saints whose feasts occur during the week, please use the links on the version of this newsletter which is on the parish website (address at the bottom of this sheet).
Mary, Mother of the Church: The Marian title of “Mother of the Church,” was given to Our Lady by St Pope Paul VI at the Second Vatican Council. On March 3rd 2018 the Vatican announced Pope Francis’ decision that the Church celebrate the Blessed Virgin Mary in her role as “Mother of the Church” every year on the Monday after Pentecost, as a way to foster Marian piety and the maternal sense of the Church.
Parish Prayer Cards: If you did not get one or would like to take one for somebody else, please help yourself from the box at the back of church. If you are a visitor to our church, please take one and remember us in your prayers when you go back home.

Second Collection: There will be a second collection next Sunday in support of “The Day for Life” which is the day in the Church’s year dedicated to raising awareness about the meaning and value of human life at every stage and in every condition. The Church teaches that life is to be nurtured from conception to natural death. There are ten mandatory second collections each year and this will be the fifth. If it seems as if there have been a lot recently, this is because there have been! There are five collections between the middle of May and the middle of July. Thank you in advance for your unfailing generosity.
Mass Climate Lobby: Wednesday 26th June. Join CAFOD at an unforgettable event in London. The theme chosen by the Holy Father, Pope Francis for the 53rd World Communications Day is: “We are members one of another”. (Eph 4,25). From network community to human communities. In his first message for World Communications Day in 2014, the Holy Father called for the Internet to be “an environment rich in humanity, a network not of wires but of people”. The choice of the theme for the 2019 Message confirms Pope Francis’ attention to the new communications environment and for social networks, especially, where he is personally present with his @Pontifex account on Twitter and @Franciscus on Instagram.

SPUC has joined with the Knights of St Columba and aim to pray the Rosary in front of the Blessed Sacrament once a month for the unborn and their families. Although we do not have a branch of the Knights of St Columba in our parish, is this “Rosary for Life” something that we could organise here at St. Gregory’s? If you are interested, please have a word with Peter Fryer after Mass.
St Charles Lwanga and companions: Charles Lwanga was born in 1860 in Bugunda (part of modern Uganda) and became a member of the Royal Court. He also trained as a catechist. He was martyred on 3rd June 1886 together with twenty-two Catholics and a number of Anglican men and boys during the persecution of Anglicans and Catholics by King Mwanga.
St Boniface of Crediton: Boniface is known as the apostle of the Germans. Born as Winfrith in the Kingdom of Wessex, probably at Crediton in Devon, in about 680, he was a monk and teacher at Nursling in Hampshire, but in 716 he went to evangelise the German people. Ordained Bishop, he was given wide-ranging papal commissions throughout Germany and Gaul. Supported by his English connections, he founded monasteries and established dioceses, presided at synods and liaised with kings. He set out to convert the Frisians in 754 but was killed by robbers in a place not far from Dokkum, the Netherlands, on 5thJune 754. His remains are still venerated in his monastery, now Fulda Cathedral, north-east of Frankfurt.

Under the guidance of Pope Gregory’s Pastoral Rule, he adapted rites and practices to local conditions, and successfully evangelised the kingdom of Kent, establishing bishoprics at Canterbury, Rochester and London. He died in Canterbury on 26thMay in around 604/5. Both Catholics and Anglicans alike venerate Augustine as the founder of the metropolitan see of Canterbury and the English Church.

Let us not forget their poor parents and teachers as well! We pray especially for four of our young parishioners: Amy (A levels), Jasmine (AS level), Grace and Stephen (GCSEs).

Loose change dropped into the “little red boxes” really does amount to a significant sum over the year. If you would like to join the scheme, please see Bron Coleman after Mass.
Register of Deaths:Details are recorded in a Register of Deaths. These details are now duplicated in digital format and a printed version can be consulted in the file which can be found at the back of church. Nottingham Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes: This will take place from 14th - 19th July. There are details in the plastic wallet in the rack at the back of church and/or: www.tangney-tours.com/nottingham.
Saint Matthias:Matthias, whose name means “gift of God”, was the disciple chosen to replace Judas as one of the twelve Apostles. The Acts of the Apostles states that he was also one of the seventy-two disciples that the Lord Jesus sent out to preach the good news. Matthias was with the Lord since His Baptism, and was “a witness to Christ’s Resurrection,” according to St. Peter in Acts. He remained with Jesus until His Ascension. According to various traditions, Matthias preached in Cappadocia, Jerusalem, the shores of the Caspian Sea (in modern day Georgia) and Ethiopia.  He is said to have met his death by crucifixion in Colchis or by stoning in Jerusalem. There is evidence cited in some of the early Church fathers that there was a Gospel according to Matthias in circulation, but it has since been lost, and was declared apocryphal by Pope Gelasius.
