First Blessing: “First blessings” are customarily given by newly ordained priests when first Masses are celebrated, but they may be given up to a full year after ordination. Last Sunday some parishioners took advantage of the possibility of receiving a “First Blessing” from Father David who is happy to give his blessing to any parishioner who wishes to receive it after Mass this Sunday.
Sick list: Please remember in your prayers the following members of our parish: Terry Cantle, Ida De Melo, Angela Doyle, Assunta Furno, Bernard Moyers, Irene Pallot, Mary Powell, Eva Shirreffs.
Finances: Collection 15th July £90.94; Apostleship of the Sea an additional £4.00. Many thanks. (Cheques made payable to St. Gregory’s RC Church)
Feast of St Gregory: the feast of the patron saint of our parish is on Monday September 3rd. On Sunday 2ndSeptember, Father Anthony will be coming to celebrate Mass with us at 9.00am. It is hoped that this special occasion can be marked by a shared lunch at 1.00pm. There will be more details later. Please mark this date in your diaries.
Gift Aid explained: If you are a taxpayer, when you give money to the Church, tax has already been paid on that money. Because the Church is exempt from tax, we can claim this money back from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). For example, for every £10 that you give to the Church, the Church can claim back £2.50 from the Government at absolutely no extra charge to you. This applies to smaller or larger donations. It is totally painless. If you would like to join the Gift Aid scheme, please speak to Paul Carroll or Stephen Giacchino.
St Ignatius of Loyola: Born in 1491 at Loyola in the north of Spain of a courtly family, he became a soldier,
but during convalescence from a wound, was converted to a deep love of Christ and a missionary sense. He studied theology in Paris. With companions, he formed the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), to resist the Protestant Reformation, to reform the Church from within and to educate the young in religion. He died in 1556 in Rome.
St Alphonsus Liguori: Alphonsus was born in 1696 in Naples. A lawyer who became a priest, he founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorists). He was a fervent preacher and an eminent  moral theologian, who opposed the rigours of Jansenism. He was much in demand as a confessor, seeking to win back the sinful by a gentle and direct appeal to the Gospel. He wrote many works of devotion which became very popular. He was forced to become Bishop of Sant’ Agata de’ Goti, but after thirteen years returned to his congregation. He died in 1787.
St John Mary Vianney: John Vianney was born in 1786 near Lyon in France. Not gifted in his studies, he had great difficulty in being accepted for ordination. He was sent to the parish of Ars, which he transformed by his preaching, his personal mortification, his life of prayer and charity for all, and particularly by his fame as a confessor – people came to him for spiritual help from all over the world. He died in 1859.
