Apostleship of the Sea:The Apostleship of the Sea is a Catholic charity supporting seafarers worldwide. They provide practical and pastoral care to all seafarers, regardless of nationality, belief or race. Their port chaplains and volunteer ship visitors welcome seafarers, offer welfare services and advice, practical help, care and friendship. The Apostleship of the Sea in Great Britain is part of an international network known to the maritime world as Stella Maris, working in 311 ports with 216 port chaplains around the world. 90% of world trade is transported by ship. However, the life of a modern seafarer can be dangerous and lonely. They may spend up to a year at a time away from home, separated from their family and loved ones and often working in harsh conditions. The Apostleship of the Sea relies wholly on voluntary contributions. They are only able to continue their work through the generous donations of their supporters and volunteers. There will be a second collection today for this important charity.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel: Carmel was the place where the prophet Elijah proclaimed the faith of Israel in the one God, the meeting place of God and his people. During the crusades, Christian hermits established themselves in caves on the mountain. In the thirteenth century, they joined together in a religious community known as the Carmelites. Mount Carmel overlooks the plains of Galilee, not far from Nazareth, and is particularly under the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Saint Apollinaris: Apollinaris was the first Bishop of Ravenna in the time of the Emperor Claudius. Frequently exiled, imprisoned and tortured for the faith, he was finally martyred at Classis, a suburb of Ravenna, in the reign of Vespasian.
