The Jubilee Year of Mercy
Pope Francis and our Bishop Patrick are asking us to be involved in welcoming and living out the Jubilee Year of Mercy. We have been asked to have a decorated Door of Mercy to remind us of God’s mercy in our lives. By opening His Arms and Heart on the Cross, Jesus is the door, the gateway leading us to God. More details and the prayer of the Jubilee of Mercy can be gained by clicking on the title of this paragraph.
PLEASE NOTE: please do have the Jubilee Year of Mercy prayer with you or use the prayer card provided which you can find on your seats. This prayer is to be said at the end of Mass before the final hymn.
THE HOLY DOOR – Jesus said, “Very truly, I tell you, I am the GATE for the sheep. I am the door, whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” John 10 verses 7, 9 and 10.
The holy door is a vital symbol in this Year of Mercy. Pope Francis, in his capacity as the Successor of St Peter has called the universal Church to actively partake in the jubilee year of Mercy. He deeply believes that the whole world is in need of God’s Mercy. Everyone needs to receive and give God’s mercy to others.
So what have we been asked to do? Decorate one of our church doors to remind us about Jesus, the Gate (see image on left). Celebrate the Sacrament of Confession during the year of Mercy. Make a pilgrimage to one of the special diocesan Churches and enter through the designated holy door of Mercy. Be actively involved doing the Corporal Works of Mercy which include: feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, visiting the sick, sheltering the homeless, visiting prisoners and burying the dead.
